Irish Under 19 Cup (Born 1988 or Later)

National 50 Metre Swimming Pool

University Arena, Limerick

November 23-25 2007

The Irish Under 19 Cup Championships have taken place in Limerick (Nov 23-25). The Men’s Championship was won by Half Moon and the Women’s by defending Champion St Vincent's.

The Women’s Cup was won by St Vincent's in an exciting final by a score line of 8 goals to 7. The final was a tense affair, with the Dublin side just having enough in the tank to win over their tenacious Belfast opponents, Cathal Brugha. There were a number of strong performances from players including Brugha’s Niamh and Aoife Barr, Orla Monaghan and Caoimhe Cooke, Jennifer Murphy and Christine Murphy. However, her overall mastery, power and strength meant that Laura Murphy was named ‘Player of the Tournament’. Two outstanding future stars are Vincents’ Lisa Kelly (age 12) and Glenalbyn’s Eva Banks (13). Both will surely make their mark - and sooner rather than later.

The Men’ Cup was a very open competition, with any 1 of 4 teams in with a chance of winning. However, Half Moon are the ones whose name will be etched on the Cup for this year after their victory in the final. The ‘Moonies’ had to endure extra time and a Penalty shoot out in their semi final before overcoming St Vincent's. They then beat a talented Corrib side in the final. Among many big performances were those of Senior Internationals Stiofán McMahon and Eoin Doyle, together with Eoghan Farrelly and Seán Kenna. The MVP was Corrib’s David Hosty, who played so well throughout the tournament – especially in the semi and final against top opponents McMahon and Farrelly.

Well done to all.
