Irish Under 19
Cup (Born 1989 or Later) National 50 Metre
Swimming Pool University Arena,
November 28-30
2008 The
Irish Under 19 Cup Championships took place at the University Arena in
Limerick (Nov 28-30). St Vincent's did the double for the second time in
three years. In
the Women’s Competition, the Vincents girls were pushed strongly by a fine Cathal
Brugha side, but the Vins came out winners at the end of an exciting match.
As usual, the Chairman’s daughters Jennifer and Laura Murphy were dominant as
was Christine Kelly. Likewise, Niamh Barr, Caoimhe Cooke and Orla Monaghan
were the stars for Brugha. However, the MVP award went to up and coming star
Lisa Kelly of Vincents. Lisa - aged just 13 - is the youngest ever recipient
of this award, but her awareness, positioning and stunning outside shooting
won her the title. St
Vincent's went into their men’s final having earlier survived a thrilling
semi final encounter with Corrib. This game went to penalties after extra
time and meant little rest for the Vins before the final. In
a fantastic game, filled with skill, passion and total commitment, Cathal
Brugha scored first and were never behind until 20 seconds from the end, when
Sean Kenna converted a penalty for the winning goal. In addition to Sean,
Vincents had top performers in Eoin Bridgeman, Jack Baker and Bense Pall.
Brugha’s stars included keeper Daniel Moore, Matt Hanna, Stephen Durkan and
MVP Adrian Hanna. Congratulations
to St Vincent's on the double and commiserations to Brugha for their fine
performances in defeat.
